Interview

With Catherine Kelleher of Catcall

How is ‘The Warmest Place’ coming along?

It’s going really well, we’re at that point where we’re finishing up final production and mixes, working out which tracks are going to make the cut. We’re at the point where we’ll prepare another single to come out early 2012 then the album soon after.

What can people expect from the album?

A lot more guitars than they think.

Your early days as lead vocalist for punk band ‘Kiosk’ and the current Catcall sound couldn’t be more different … can you describe the events and decisions that led to this evolution?

Kiosk came to a natural end in 2006 after we did a US tour and put out another EP. I had been going through some intense family shit and started Catcall as a personal creative project to focus some grief and also because I’d been getting obsessed with a lot of pop music over that past year, and electronic music…basically the opposite of punk and rock n’ roll and everything I had obsessed over in my teens. Then I just started making simple demos on a computer with beat loops and synths and it kind of expanded from there into collaborations and now an album.

I don’t know where I’d be without online media … really interesting and wonderful music has bubbled to surface because of it.

‘Satellites’ has received limited support from traditional media, yet it was recently rated as one of Gorilla Vs Bear’s best tracks of 2011. From an artists point of view - how important are blogs and online media in promoting new music?

It’s especially important when you haven’t got the traditional outlets getting behind you, but it kinda means you have more control over building your audience and interacting with them. You can never rely on the traditional outlets because they always have their own agenda. I don’t know where I’d be without online media and I also think a lot of really interesting and wonderful music has bubbled to surface because of it.

In the last couple of years you’ve supported some big name artists - who has been your favourite so far?

I really enjoyed supporting Phoenix, because not only were they really lovely to tour with, super nice and friendly, but I enjoyed their show a lot. Completely fun and unpretentious, and they write great pop songs too.

Who are your 3 favourite emerging artists that you’re currently listening to?

1. Royal Headache

2. Forces

3. Magic Silver White

What are your 3 favourite tracks from this year?

1. Royal Headache – Really in Love

2. Gang Gang Dance – MindKilla

3. Brous - Streamers
